Last semester, I focused on the career of a news anchor for one of the many news channels on television. This semester, I’m focusing on reporting for a web-based news service.
The broadcast field is definitely changing rapidly. Recently, there has been an increased focus on the Internet when it comes to delivering the news. In many cases, local news reporters have to submit separate reports for their Facebook page. It seems inevitable that more and more emphasis will be placed on this kind of reporting as technology continues to advance. With a fast paced society, people want their news as fast as they can get it, often on-the-go. Being able to watch a portion of a news cast on the Internet, or even a specific report on a specific subject, is the growing future of the industry.
There are already sections on the websites of numerous news organizations that employ this idea. CNN, Fox News, ABC News, and CBS News all have areas on their websites that allow reporters and bloggers to send in their thoughts and reports on a subject. Many of these reports never appear on the air, and are exclusive to the Internet.
It seems to me that it is a natural progression of the news to integrate the Internet more and more. More Internet specific news broadcasts seem to be a growing possibility. Eventually, news corporations may hire completely different people to anchor and report for the online news, while other anchors and reporters report on television. The more widespread the internet becomes, and the more technology advances, web based news broadcasts will continue to become more popular.
This needs to have a lot more detail. How does one go about being an Internet reporter? Starting salary?
