Practicum Final Report

                                                            Practicum Final Report

This semester in Practicum, I was heavily involved with the Yearbook.  I am the Video Editor once again this year, and I learned from last year that I needed to start getting footage earlier this year.  This idea was implemented the first week of school, when Cynthia and I shot footage of Move-In Day at Florida Southern.  Throughout this semester, I have been in charge of assigning events for students to go film.  These assignments were generally handed out during our meetings every Monday.  In many cases I have ended up filming the events myself (Rec Fest, TZE DEK, the Pink Party, the Christmas Tree Lighting).  In many ways, I like to film the events personally, as I know what kind of shots I need, and how to properly shoot them.  A lot of the footage I received at the beginning of the year was shaky because no tripod was used and, therefore, virtually unusable.  I now tell students to take a tripod with them whenever the are out getting footage of an event.
Much of my time is spent reviewing footage that was shot, importing it into Final Cut Pro, and editing it down to what can be used.  This process takes quite a while, especially if the footage is of an event that lasted a long time, like a basketball game.  I had previously talked to Bob about having a wider variety of events included in the video this year, which has allowed me to film more events this semester than I did last year.  I also talked to John Luti about getting some of his sports footage to use in the yearbook, and to Cynthia about getting some of the episodes of Wellness TV to include on the DVD.  My plan is to have enough footage by the beginning of February, in order to have the Video completed before April.
Many of the times I filmed events around the campus I went with Shannah and shot video while she took pictures. I also took pictures of the Christmas Tree Lighting, which was a new experience for me.  Up until that point, I had never taken pictures for Interlachen.  I had always just stuck to video.  Shannah went with me and showed me how to adjust the F-Stop and appature settings, since it was dark outside.  I would not mind taking pictures of events again, but I do still prefer video.  I feel like I can be more creative recording a moving action instead of having to take still pictures.
Throughout the semester, I also went to a few of the News Show shoots.  I am definitely interested in anchoring the show, and possibly taking over Anna’s spot as Producer when she graduates.
I also helped John Luti a couple of times with the Sports Show, including recording the voice over for the intro.  We have also discussed having me come on the podcast as a special guest next semester.
Looking ahead to next semester, I will continue my work with the Yearbook, as well as hopefully becoming more involved with the News Show.
